Dressage is an Olympic discipline. It is a precision sport in which the rider strives to create a harmonious, elegant team with the horse, the goal being to train the horse to its highest gymnastic ability. This has given dressage the reputation of being the ballet of equestrian disciplines.

Dressage is actually a French word which literally translated means "training". The object of the sport is to develop the natural physique and ability of the horse while it is carrying the rider. All of the movements performed are are based on movements that can be seen executed in some form while the horse is at liberty in the field.

Dressage makes the horse calm, supple, loose and flexible, but also confident, attentive and keen, thus achieving perfect understanding with his rider. The horse thus gives the impression of doing of his own accord what is required of him. Often, it will seem as if the rider is merely along for the ride, but in reality, advanced dressage riders are highly skilled athletes, giving subtle commands during the entire performance. It is not uncommon to see both dressage horse and rider drenched with perspiration after a performance or training session.

"On the bit" In all all his work, even at the halt, the horse must be on the bit. A horse is said to be on the bit when his neck is raised and arched and he accepts the bridle with a light and soft contact and submissiveness throughout. The head should remain in a steady position, as a rule slightly in front of the vertical, with a supple poll ( right between the ears) as the highest point of the neck, and no resistance should be offered to the rider.

Dressage is a harmonious blend of horse and rider that is both elegant and exciting to behold.
