Small incisions are made in the upper flank of the horse and small tubes called cannulas are introduced into the abdomen. The first incision is between the hip bone and the first rib. The trocar -cannula unit is inserted into the inflated abdomen and the telescope is placed through it. Another cannula is inserted above and a 3rd below . These additional cannulas allow for introduction of grasping and vessel sealing instruments.

The "insufflator" fills the horses abdomen with carbon dioxide thereby compressing the intestines and allowing visibility. The horse is also fasted for 24 hrs prior to laparoscopy to ensure there is plenty of room to work!

Comfortable padding of the head and beneath the halter helps avoid any discomfort or nerve paralysis

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Standing Laparoscopic Surgery is now available to BC horse owners! Laparoscopy means looking into the abdomen with a telescope.

A general anesthetic is not needed which translates into a cost savings for the owner. Small incisions are made in the flank to introduce instruments and remove tissue. Laparoscopy provides greater safety to the horse since the incisions are very small.

The following is a list of procedures that we can do standing:

  • Testicles that remain in the abdomen (cryptorchid or "rig")
  • Removal of ovaries from mares with tumors or bad temperaments
  • Exam of internal organs such as liver or kidneys and direct visualisation of biopsies.
  • Exam of horses with chronic colic.

The horse is sedated and restrained in well padded stocks to prevent movement during surgery

This radiosurgery (electrosurgery) instrument coagulates the blood vessels and then cuts them in order to remove the testis or ovaries
